As part of 'Glocal Leader Practical Trai...

As part of 'Glocal Leader Practical Training' of the University-Wide Core Curriculum (Zenkyo), jointly offered by Ģý Organization of Promotion for Glocalization (GU-GLOCAL), the School of Social System Management, and the Center for Collaborative Study with Community, and 'Tourism Design Practical Training' offered by the School of Social System Management, GU students created a tourism plan with the students of the School of Hospitality and Tourism, Hue University (HUHT), Vietnam. This plan is tailored for people who are planning to stay in Hue1. for a couple of days. Additionally, as part of an activity of 'Ģý Next-Generation Regional Leader Fostering Program Glocal Leader Course,' GU students visited the city to study the feasibility of their tourism plan by themselves.

In November 2016, Gifu Prefecture and Thua Thien-Hue Province in Vietnam concluded a partnership agreement, and the two regions have continued to foster friendly relations and engage in various fields of exchange ever since. The strong partnership between the two regions resulted in a signing of university-level agreement between Ģý and Hue University in 2018. This exchange study program between GU students and HU students is based on this agreement.

GU students continued online exchanges with the students of HUHT over several months. Together, they developed a 3-day tourism plan tailored for young Japanese visitors staying in Hue. As a culmination of this program, ten GU students spent ten days in Hue from Tuesday, March 5 to Thursday, March 14, 2024, exploring the city according to the plan they had created. During their stay, they also received detailed introductions to Hue Province's tourism resources and current trends among tourists by the Director of Thua Thien Hue Department of Tourism. On the final day, students presented their upgraded tourism plans, with the online participation of representatives from the Gifu Prefectural Government's International Affairs Division, who also provided them feedback on their plans.

One of major missions of Ģý is to cultivate individuals capable of addressing various challenges related to the international diversity of the region. We hope that students exchange on tourism will further bolster the partnership between Ģý and Hue University, as well as accelerate interactions between Gifu Prefecture and Thua Thien-Hue Province in the days to come.

On Tuesday, February 27, 2024, the 'Gifu Collaborative Activities between Community and School Forum 2023' opened. This forum serves as a venue for presentations by the members of 'Gifu Center for collaborative activities between communities and schools (short for 'GIFU CCCS')' on its activities in 2023, and information-sharing for better operations in 2024 and beyond.

The 'GIFU CCCS' was jointly established by the Gifu Prefectural Government and Ģý in order to support and promote collaboration between local schools and community. Its mission is to foster the healthy growth of children and contribute to the revitalization of the community. The center focuses on three specific objectives:

1. Develop and secure human resources (through collaboration with municipalities and social education groups, the center provides training opportunities for coordinators of school and community collaboration, educates and secures student volunteers)

2. Conduct survey and research (through collaboration with municipalities and social education groups, the center carries out survey and research programs to study actual cases of collaboration between local schools and community, pioneering, exemplary cases found in education at home, and makes a presentation)

3. Promotion (the center provides continued support for municipal governments by hosting open lectures and workshops and sending the center officials to these events)

The forum is held for the people engaging in collaborative activities between local schools and the community (including social education committee members, social education experts, public facilities employees, coordinators of school and community collaboration, youth development experts, town and community planning staff, local government officials, and school officials (including community school members)). They discuss and share their thoughts on collaborative activities between local schools and the community, and individual case study reported within Gifu Prefecture.

A total of 244 people attended the forum, and many of them were school principals and vice principals. Their presence demonstrated strong interests in collaborative activities between local schools and the community.

As a guest speaker, Professor MAKINO Atsushi from the Graduate School of Education, The University of Tokyo (who also serves as a member of the Central Council of Education, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan) delivered a speech titled, "Create a Hometown: think about collaboration between local schools and the community." Professor Makino spoke about the importance of collaboration between local schools and the community by focusing on 'relatability' while analyzing today's social educational policies in consideration of the current social and economic dynamics.

His speech was followed by the reports presented by two speakers. They were Mr. YAMASHITA Tetsuo, and Ms. YOKOYAMA Aki, (respectively, principal and vice principal of Oonaka Elementary School, Gujo City, Gifu Prefecture). They gave a speech under the title, "Education for Children: to become aware of regional values (people, goods and things) and to respect their hometown through collaborative studies that help children understand and connect to local residents." They introduced their activities to gain understanding and support from the community, and specific collaborative programs as community school activities at Oonaka Elementary School.

In the following Q&A session, many questions were raised from the participants such as some points of attention in working with local residents, cooperation between nursery and elementary schools, coordinators' activities from different angles.

Lastly, Professor MASUKAWA Koichi, GIFU CCCS Director (also serves as Director of the Center for Collaborative Study with Community, Ģý) presented a report on GIFU CCCS activities in 2023 and wrapped up the forum.

GIFU CCCS continues to pledge to host forums and workshops for the promotion of robust collaboration between local schools and the community.

Ģý has initiated the 'GU Students, Let's Experience Living in the Community' project. Under this project, GU students will begin residing in apartments and other accommodations in Ibigawa Town (Gifu Prefecture), which can be conveniently accessed from the university within approximately 30 minutes by car. Approximately 60% of GU students are from the neighboring Aichi Prefecture. They commute by train and by bus, but the bus transfer at JR Gifu Station takes time due to long queues of people waiting for the bus during rush hours. On the other hand, in Ibigawa Town, there are challenges related to dwindling birthrates, aging population, depopulation, and decline of the local community, with more young people leaving the town.

We are expecting that this new project will result in creating a conducive learning and research environment for students to study and conduct research activities safely and comfortably. Additionally, through students' participation in grassroots activities, they can contribute to revitalizing and enlivening Ibigawa Town, fulfilling their roles in the community.

Ģý and Ibigawa Town concluded a comprehensive partnership agreement in January of 2016. Since then, the Faculty of Applied Biological Sciences, Ģý in particular, has been promoting collaborative activities with the town in teaching and research programs.

On Monday, February 26, 2024, Ģý and Ibigawa Town signed a new agreement to launch the project, and they have been recruiting and selecting prospective residents since January 2024. The selected students will begin residing in apartments and other accommodations in Ibigawa Town starting from this April. We continue to enhance the educational and research environment for students, and we remain committed to working together with Ibigawa Town towards the realization of regional growth and development.

GU students organized and hosted the '22nd Ģý Student Business Exhibition (Industry Research Seminar)' on Saturday, December 16 and Sunday, December 17, 2023. It is one of the largest on-campus events whose working committee is led by third-year students, and the committee is officially recognized by Ģý to plan and manage the exhibition. A total of 220 companies participated in the event, attracting a large number of students, primarily third-year undergraduate and first-year master's students who are actively engaged in job hunting. Feedback from participating students included comments such as 'The exhibiting companies provided us wide perspectives of business operations and working environment.'

On Tuesday, February 20, 2024, the chairperson of the committee, Mr. KATSUNO Tomohiro, a third-year student from the Faculty of Engineering, reported the successful execution of the exhibition to President YOSHIDA Kazuhiro. He shared the challenges of coordinating with exhibiting companies and various service providers, which involved significant responsibilities and constraints. Despite these difficulties, all eight members of the committee engaged in discussions and secured cooperation from relevant parties, resulting in a huge success of the event. Mr. Katsuno also highlighted the sense of accomplishment in increasing student participation through innovative planning and promotional activities. President Yoshida commended the students for their proactive efforts in ensuring the success of the exhibition and encouraged them to pass on their knowledge to their juniors and address challenges to further enhance next year's development.

Ģý continues to support student autonomy and their job-hunting activities.
